The IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) 68th Edition will come into effect on 1 January 2027, introducing several important updates to the requirements for the transport of dangerous goods by air.

One of the key areas of change is the handling and transportation of batteries, particularly lithium batteries and emerging battery technologies.

🔋 1. Stricter Rules for Power Banks & Batteries – Passengers

The 68th Edition introduces important changes for passengers and crew members carrying batteries:

• Power banks over 100 Wh will not be permitted for carriage by passengers or crew.
• A maximum of 2 power banks per person will be permitted.
• Power banks must be carried in carry-on baggage only.
• Charging power banks or using them to charge devices during the flight is prohibited.
• The maximum number of spare batteries permitted for passengers will be reduced from 20 to 18 batteries per person.

📦 2. New UN Numbers & Battery Requirements

The updated regulations provide clearer requirements for emerging battery technologies, including sodium-ion batteries and hybrid batteries.

New UN numbers include:

• UN 3563 – Lithium metal batteries installed in cargo transport units
• UN 3564 – Sodium-ion batteries installed in cargo transport units

These updates are particularly relevant to manufacturers, shippers, freight forwarders, and other parties involved in battery transportation.

🏷️ 3. Battery Marking & Labelling Updates

The Battery Mark has also been simplified.

The previous requirement to include a telephone number for contact purposes on the Battery Mark has been removed.

This change helps simplify the marking requirements for applicable lithium battery shipments.

🩸 4. Additional Special Provisions

The regulations have also been updated to expand certain provisions covering the transportation of blood and blood components prepared for transfusion.
